**What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?**
This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.
**GS-09:** $50,598 (Step 01) to $65,778 (Step 10);
**GS-11:**$61,218 (Step 01) to $79,586 (Step 10);
**NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at**the Step 01.

### Responsibilities
**As a CHEMIST within the UPPER MIDWEST ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:**
* Performs chemical analyses and tests on biological, water, and sediment samples.
* Performs calculations and computer programming used for analysis.
* Detects unusual reactions and instances when the established methods and procedures are not applicable.

In addition to the basic education requirements, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:
**Specialized experience for GS-9 Chemist**
One year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include performing relatively routine and limited chemical analyses with a variety of laboratory instrumentation and techniques including, but not limited to, pH meters, dissolved oxygen meters, coulter counters, analytical balances, volumetric glassware, high pressure liquid chromatographs, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, triple quad and quantitative time of flight mass spectrometers, high speed centrifuges, and the extraction of analytes from water, animal tissue, and sediment. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures, and would have required a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of chemistry.
**Specialized experience for GS-11 Chemist**
One year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: experience as a researcher with indepedent responsibility for determining the toxicity of molecules, identifying the structural components of a molecule that cause it to be toxic and selective, applying knowledge to answer complex toxicological and risk assessment questions using multidisciplinary data (e.g., physical, chemical, biological, physiological, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic) garnered from experimentation, peer-reviewed journals, and toxicology databases. Chemical toxicology, applied mathematics and statistics, and qualitative structure activity models (QSARs). Using QSARs to select potential new toxicants to be used to as species selective biocides. Relating toxicological models with both cellular assays and live aquatic animal toxicity trials. Developing liquid chromatographic methods using both quadrupole and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy for quantifying environmental chemical toxicants used to control aquatic invasive species. Investigating metabolomics analyses of biological pathways disrupted by chemical toxicants.
